Career Education

Career education is an important part of this programme and will give young people the opportunity to consider different options for their future.  Career education assists students to develop knowledge, attitudes and skills. This will help them to make informed decisions about their study and/or work options and enable them to participate effectively in working life.

Why Career Education?

  • The world of work is complex and dynamic.
  • The workplace environment has changed dramatically in the past few decades and rapid change is likely to remain a feature of the world of work.
  • Workers need not only technical and/or professional skills and competencies, but also require well-developed personal and social skills.
  • Technological changes demand that workers must either learn new skills or change occupations in order to remain competitive in the modern workplace.
  • Today’s students can expect to have at least one significant career change and several company changes during their working lives.
  • They may perhaps be involved in jobs or careers that do not yet exist.
  • Flexible and transferable skills are valued highly.
  • The concept of lifelong learning is important. Workers are required to refresh their knowledge and skills and often to acquire a base of new knowledge and skills in order to operate in the contemporary workplace and in the dynamic workplace of the future.

MENTORING

Mentoring is a powerful personal development and empowerment tool.

It is an effective way of helping people to progress in their careers and education. It is becoming increasing popular as its potential is realised.

It is a partnership between two people (mentor and mentee) normally working in a similar field or sharing similar experiences.

It is a helpful relationship based upon mutual trust and respect.

A mentor is a guide who can help the mentee to find the right direction and who can help them to develop solutions to career or education issues.

Mentors rely upon having had similar experiences to gain an empathy with the mentee and an understanding of their issues. Mentoring provides the mentee with an opportunity to think about career options and progress.

MOTIVATIONAL SPEAKERS

Motivational speakers are engaged to generate positive thinking and responses among ATAWHAI participants, boosting enthusiasm and energy while delivering relevant, practical content coinciding with the objectives of the programme.

Anybody who has ever tried talking to young adults knows that it is at times a difficult task.

Motivational speakers come up with ways of speaking to them that transcends the usual restraints of adult to teen conversations and gets results.

Using a style that employs personal stories that teens can relate to, humorous anecdotes, and life lessons to be taken seriously, motivational speakers are an effective way of communicating with young people.

As teens continue to display life choices that make growing up strong and healthy a risky endeavour, motivational speakers find a way of connecting

with teens on an inspirational and enthusiastic level that encourages youth to make better choice about their future.

BOARDING SCHOOL SCHOLARSHIPS

The ATAWHAI Charitable Trust will support sending two students to boarding school. The scholarships are worth $ 7500.00, only students who have graduated from our ATAWHAI programme are eligible to apply. The application for the scholarship needs to be made by November the year before the student will attend boarding school. The student and whanau will need to submit a letter to the ATAWHAI Charitable Trust and if successful we will inform you in writing.
